Pharmacognosy (from the Greek words pharmacon = drug and gnosis = knowledge), one of the oldest fields of pharmaceutical science, deals with the knowledge of natural products, which are used as drugs or could contribute to the development of drugs. It is a highly interdisciplinary field based on chemistry and encompassing botany, biology, biochemistry, analysis, agronomy, and of course all the other aspects of pharmacy, i.e. pharmacology, medicinal chemistry, biopharmacy, etc.
